Dunkerque 1940 – Opération Dynamo museum
The Dunkerque 1940/Opération Dynamo museum is based in the blockhouses of Bastion 32, which was the defence headquarters of the fortified part of Dunkirk. It was from here that the orders for land defence were sent out, but it was also the centre for coordination of sea evacuations.
The renovated and extended museum now boasts a surface area of about 1,000 m².
Display cabinets of period items, weapons, uniforms, photos and maps extend over some 400 linear metres.
A cinema space allows visitors to view period film footage with commentary in French and English (about 12 minutes). As the visit is long, it is not unusual to see visitors resting on the benches that can be found throughout the blockhouses. Some take notes, others remember, and others still are lost in meditation.
This museum is an international crossroad: all nationalities intermingle and sometimes conversations begin…
When you leave us, your view of the Battle of Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo, as well as of the History of World War II, will have changed.
