Mining History Centre – Lewarde
A unique human and industrial experience
Located some 8 km from Douai in the Nord department (France), the Mining History Centre of Lewarde is situated in the heart of the Mining Basin. Set on the former Delloye colliery yard, since 2012 it has become one of the impressive sites of the mining area listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This former coal mine, which was in operation between 1931 and 1971, has maintained its emblematic buildings such as the bathroom with hundreds of hanging garments, the lamp store and its multitude of original lamps, as well as the stables.
Major exhibits immerse visitors in three centuries of mining history, daily life in the mining community, how coal is formed, etc. A guided tour with a cultural mediator through the 450 metres of tunnels helps visitors understand how techniques and working conditions evolved from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Back on the surface, a testimonial encounter with a former miner is a special opportunity to meet someone with first-hand experience of the mine.
Every year, numerous events and temporary exhibitions offer a different perspective on the mining world. Lastly, the Mining History Centre also houses Archives and a scientific energy culture centre.
