Internment and Deportation Memorial – Royallieu Camp
Built in 1913, the military barracks of Royallieu was transformed into internment camp for political prisoners from 1941 till 1944.
During this period, more than 45000 Resistance fighters, Jews, civilians (Americans, Russians) passed in transit by Royallieu before being deported towards the Nazi death camps. Near half of them will not come back.
The Memorial, situated on a part of the camp, tells the story of these people through archival documents, sound testimonies, projections, films and permits to understand how they lived there.
Don’t forget the garden of the Memory where you can listen to talking chairs, and the tunnel of evasion, discovered during the works.
The Memorial opened its doors on February 23rd, 2008.
